Review by Karen Takle Quinn

Video Training by ViaGrafix (One American Way, Pryor OK 74361)

This is a very effective video training cassette including exercises on 3.5" floppy. The videocassette is divided into 5 Chapters. Chapter 1 presents a sample presentation and provides an overview of the various views. Chapter 2 teaches users how to create shows with and without the user assistant, it demonstrates the use of basic functions such as, zoom, outliner, slide editor, and save. Chapter 3 builds upon the material provided in the first two chapters and enhances the learners competency with the use of shortcuts to modify bullets, text attributes, and utilize basic functions. It also teaches the learner how to be more productive by importing slides from other presentations. Chapter 4 extends the learner's knowledge on how to use clip art, the Master Galley and how to work with backgrounds. The last chapter teaches how to create speaker notes and printing. Even if you have begun to use Presentations 8, this tape is worth an hour and twenty minutes of your time to review. I'll bet you will enhance your productivity and/or learn something you hadn't discovered on your own.

Quattro Pro 8, Introduction

Review by Gary Smith

Video Training by ViaGrafix (One American Way, Pryor OK 74361)

Our South Bay WordPerfect User's Group had the opportunity at our April 1997 meeting to view the ViaGrafix video Corel Quattro Pro 8, Introduction (one of a series of two training videos on Quattro Pro) which provides a level of detail as well as breadth for an introduction video that leaves the viewer with an armful of the features of Quattro Pro 8. For example, after an adequate introduction in Chapter 1 (there are five chapters in ViaGrafix's Quattro Pro intro video) regarding the basic layout of the Quattro Pro spreadsheet (Menu Bar, Toolbar, etc.) and some other basic features such as "Object Inspector Menus for Charts" and context sensitive Property Bar, Chapter one and two go into some detail on "group mode" whereby spreadsheet labels can be "drilled" through each page of a spreadsheet so that these labels will appear in the same place (e.g. column headings) on each page of the spreadsheet as well as other features of "group mode." The author of this review did not see "group mode" in the Corel WordPerfect Suite 8 User's Guide; hence, a new perspective is given to viewers of the video. Chapter three of the video shows some helpful examples of what's included in the "Application Dialog Box" as well as a way to quickly call up the "Application Dialog Box" to the screen. Also, Chapter 3 shows the viewer some helpful tips on how to hide columns or rows by using the right mouse button to click on "Properties," and how to bring them (columns or rows) back to view, along with some other similar tips. Chapter 4 is more than adequate for an overview of "Charts" for the newcomer to Quattro Pro, as is Chapter 5 regarding "Formulas and Math." The author of this review looks forward to seeing the second in a series from ViaGrafix on Quattro Pro.

The training disk (3.5" floppy) that comes with their Quattro Pro 8 video, is helpful when studying the lessons in the five chapters. Hint: the author of this review found that, in order to first get their companion 3.5" training disk loaded on to his hard drive, he had to install a file from his Windows 95 program CD over to the ViaGrafix 3.5" training disk in order for the ViaGrafix training disk to load up. Once the file "VBRUN300.DLL" was placed on the 3.5" disk, he was able to install the training files to the hard drive per the directions on the ViaGrafix floppy training disk that accompanies their VHS cassette.

Learning Corel WordPerfect 8: Secrets/Timesavers

Review by Karen Takle Quinn

Video Training by ViaGrafix (One American Way, Pryor OK 74361)

This is a very effective video training cassette which includes exercises on 3.5" floppy. The video is divided into 5 Chapters. Chapter 1 provides the basics of moving around the document and selecting and saving selected text. Chapter 2 continues to teach users how to create and go to a bookmark, find and replace partial words, and modify the format of the document. Chapter 3 builds upon the material provided in the first two chapters and extends this knowledge with the use of shortcuts to change text attributes, cut and paste and spell check. Chapter 4 introduces the viewer to timesaving techniques such as spelling or formatting as you go, using quick links and SmartQuotes. Chapter 5 teaches how to create macros, add dot leaders, set a default font and create or edit a caption. This tape is worth an hour of your time to review. Even if you think you are a WordPerfect pro you can probably learn something new or find something you have forgotten about WordPerfect 8.
